Is a custom system worth it compared with an off-the-shelf product?

It depends on how specific your agenda is. If you do things in a standard way, a ready-made product is usually cheaper. But as soon as you have to work around the software or part of the job stays in spreadsheets anyway, a custom system pays for itself in saved time.
Can the system connect to software I already use?

Yes. If your existing system has an API or can export data, the integration is a normal part of the brief. The goal is that data is entered once and never re-typed.
What happens to the data I keep in Excel today?
